Old Navy Inspires Great Aspirations
I’ve been scrolling through Instagram and Twitter posts, searching for online articles, trying to gather every bit of information I possibly can to share with you about the Old Navy “Aspiring Young
Artist” shirt. As I sat staring at my screen, something clicked. I decided there’s no need for me to do that. Let me tell you instead what I hope to do about it.
Here’s What Happened
Yesterday evening I came across the following on my personal Facebook account:
It hit a nerve and I had to sound off. I shared the post from Southern Revivals with my Facebook friends along with my own commentary:
[T]his is what worries me about what we are teaching kids – girls in particular – today. It’s not enough to want to be an artist, musician, actress, teacher, stay-at-home mom or any number of other “stereo-typical” careers for women or non-STEM related positions. Why devalue one to boost another? Why not just reassure kids/girls you can be and are capable of being whatever you want? Period.
Based on feedback from friends (and artists’ and consumers’ reactions everywhere), they were equally annoyed by the message Old Navy was selling.
Here’s What We’re Going To Do About It
I say we because Kontos Creative and my friend Tara Burns, founder of branded, are teaming up to offer you the shirt that should have been. Young aspiring… whatever you want to be. You fill in the blank. It’s a basic white tee and a marker, but don’t let that limit your imagination. We plan to offer shirts in toddler and youth sizes. Details and specifics are being ironed out as I write.
Why We’re Doing It
Tara and myself both work in creative fields. We are also both mompreneurs. The shirt hits close to home on several levels. In the end, it comes down to the message this is sending kids. We want today’s youth to be confident in their own aspirations, whatever they might be. Our goal is for the proceeds from these shirts to help with that mission. We’re looking for a non-profit who fits the bill. Are you a non-profit who instills confidence in youth, encourages them to explore, lets them dream and supports them along the way? Do you know one that does? We would like to hear from you. If you are a jump-in-with-both-feet type of person and interested in pre-ordering, please email me directly. Include the size(s) you are interested in along with your shipping address and I will follow up with you directly regarding pricing options. If you want to wait it out, but be the first to know when we have pricing and donation details, follow Kontos Creative and branded on Facebook. We have great aspirations for this tiny tee!
